Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation launches Words etcetera.
The magic and artistry of words is celebrated with the launch today of Words etc., an exciting new venture at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation.Words etc. will explore both the written and spoken word through a series of talks and literary events.
In addition, a site specific wall installation designed by Sydney architect Chris Bosse - whose vision helped create the immensely popular Beijing Olympic Aquatic Centre – displays SCAF’s growing list of exhibition related and scholarly publications.
An intimate and dedicated space, this curated bibliotheka will allow discerning readers to browse and purchase high quality independent titles, selected magazines and small press publications focussing on contemporary art, non-fiction and artist titles.Two unique events kick off the Words etc. programme*:
July 9th, 6-8 pm —Guest lecture by Nicholas Jose, Australian Literature: Where’s the Body? The acclaimed novelist, essayist and scholar draws on his experience as general editor of the forthcoming Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature to ask what Australian writing means for contemporary readers, writers, teachers and students. Nicholas Jose has a Chair in Writing with the Writing & Society Research Group at the University of Western Sydney and is newly appointed to the distinguished annual chair of Australian studies at Harvard University.
July 16th, 6-8 pm — Dr Gene Sherman will launch The Lost Mother: A Story of Art and Love, (Melbourne University Press) by bestselling author and columnist Anne Summers. The Lost Mother recounts the story of her search for a childhood painting of her mother by Australian artist Constance Stokes . The painting will be on show at the launch, the first time it has been seen in public since 1933.
Dr Gene Sherman, director of SCAF said today, “We are immensely fortunate in being able launch Words etc. with two such well known Australian literary figures, Nicholas Jose and Anne Summers as well as having Chris Bosse’s magnificent installation. Words etc. is a unique venture where the written word truly comes into its own.”
