IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SANAA: Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa
an architectural intervention
3 July – 26 September 2009
Two of the hottest names in contemporary Japanese architecture, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa who in recent years have burst onto the world architectural stage, will give Sydneysiders a first-hand glimpse of their architectural aesthetic, when their architectural intervention at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation goes on show from July 3.
Traversing the borders of art, design and architecture, SANAA’s elegant installation is trademark Sejima + Nishizawa; a translucent and refined curvilinear acrylic wall that meanders through the entire gallery creating and articulating a sense of interior/exterior space.
Kazuyo Sejima describes the installation, "as an organic acrylic labyrinth weaving through the space. A new kind of transparency is established, softly reflecting the trees and the people moving within."
In a short space of time SANAA has achieved international acclaim with projects in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Examples include the Louvre Annex, Lens, France; the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio; the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (which won the coveted Golden Lion award, Venice Biennale for Architecture, 2004); and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, which the New York Times called, when it opened in 2007, ‘the kind of building that renews your faith in New York as a place where culture is lived.’
Dr Gene Sherman, Executive Director of the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation said today, "I’m very excited to be able to bring this aspect of SANAA’s practice to Australia. It is an extraordinary opportunity to experience the mesmerising spatial illusions that infuse the internationally esteemed partnership of Sejima and Nishizawa."
